On April 21, 2016, I was heart-broken to learn that the iconic musician Prince was found dead at his estate, Paisley Park. Across the span of four decades, Prince released over 30 albums that gave the world a musical insight into his very private world.
I’ve never had the honor of meeting Prince, but I have always considered him a big brother and friend. For me, our relationship began with the very first Prince song I ever heard, I Wanna Be Your Lover. That song brought something out in me; a feeling and a passion that I’ve never felt before. Soon after, Purple Rain followed and I was hooked. I will always remember the day I saw one of the most influential music films ever. The soundtrack spawned a series of number one hits and gave a 12 year old boy the blueprint on how to love a girl’s mind, body, and soul.
Prince’s music gave me the inspiration to approach girls and his music would not only teach me how to love but how to love deep, with no inhibitions. He came into my life for a reason and it was to teach me about my inner self. He taught me how to fight for love and how to be strong in my most vulnerable moments. Lust, love, jealousy, heartbreak; these are all feelings that resonated deep inside me when I listened to Prince’s lyrics, it was the soundtrack to my life. I remember laying in my room and looking up at my walls, which were littered with Prince posters, and confiding in him. How do I kiss her? Where do I lick her? Where do I touch her? How can I show her that my body belongs to her.
After countless songs and encounters, Prince’s music finally all made perfect sense to me. His music was just not entertainment, but it was preparing me for my chance encounter with the most beautiful girl in the world. When I first laid eyes on my wife, my inner psyche drew me to the song Adore. This song is one of my all time favorite songs, but I never knew how deep those lyrics were until she walked into my life. This was when Prince sang and assured me that I will be her all and our love would be Diamonds and Pearls.
On our wedding day, my wife and I danced to Adore and as I looked into her deep brown eyes, I thanked Prince for preparing me for the woman who stood before me and raising me for this moment. I am forever grateful and honored for the unknown influence that Prince had on my life. I am the man I am today because of you. I love you and I will miss you dearly.
