With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s only right I give you guys some good V-Day gift ideas for that special someone…but what if that someone isn’t so special? What if you guys just met? Or better yet what if she’s that “deep dark secret” you’d rather not share? Whatever the situation may be don’t worry, I’ve been there and I got ya covered. Here’s my:

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

Title-less” | Timeline: A few weeks in  | Budget: $100-$150

So you just met her and you just don’t know what to do! You don’t want to over spend, but you’ll just look like a freaking cheap skate if you don’t get her anything so, what do you do?

When things are that brand new, you want to give her a glimpse of what the future holds by sending her a bouquet of roses at work. Women talk so this will only ignite a positive conversation about “How amazing you are (or might be)” and that can only help.

If you’re not a flower guy, a perfect substitute would be some Edible Arrangements or having some chocolates delivered by companies like Godiva and Shari’s Berries.

Valentine’s Day To-do List
  • Flowers – A nice bouquet should do the trick.
  • Card (Note: Write something short and sweet | DON’T GET CARRIED AWAY!)
  • Dinner (and possibly a movie)

Girlfriend” | Timeline: 1-3 years in  | Budget: $400-$600

She made the first cut! You guys have been together for a while and now it’s starting to get serious. You got her flowers last year, but that alone won’t cut it today buddy. I’m not saying to cut it as a whole, but here’s what you’re gonna need in addition.

Valentine’s Day To-do List
  • 1-2 Dozen Roses with a Card – Be sure to take your time with what you write. I know we may not all be the best with our words, but just say what you mean and mean every word you write and she’ll cherish it forever, and if you really need help, click here.
  • Significant Jewelry – A necklace, bracelet, or ring that has your deepest devotion attached to it is usually an easy “go to” once your committed. This shows her your serious about the relationship and proves that you two are going somewhere.
  • Elegant Dinner – You’re going to want to pick a location that’s going to set the mood immediately. Somewhere that isn’t too crowded but isn’t too quiet. Somewhere that she’s never been or has been dying to go back to. In my personal experience, these types of restaurants usually carry at least a 4 star rating so do your research!
  • Something Personal – The two of you have started building a future together. Find something meaningful to you and your relationship. It could be something symbolizing an inside joke you have, or maybe something small from the place you met. Whatever it is, make it personal to your relationship and it will show her that you really thought of her and not just a “woman” when you picked the gift. One idea is to start a collection and  as a side bonus it’s a gift that can keep building over the years, like a collection of keychains from places you’ve visited together, or tee shirts from all the bands you’ve seen.

Wife” | Timeline: 5 years and beyond  | Budget: $1000+

Here’s where is starts to get tricky. There are two issues many married men tend to have. First is the inability to break routine. Usually at this point in a relationship many men find it difficult to be spontaneous. Let’s be honest, we get comfortable and the “special” moments start to escape us.

On the other hand, if you’re the type of guy who always makes sure your significant other feels appreciated, at this point you’ve pretty much done it all. After years of birthday’s, holiday’s, date nights, and those life saving apology gifts you’ve likely exhausted your options, but there is always something. This is what I suggest:

Valentine’s Day To-do List
  • Roses – At this point I’m sure you’ve caught the pattern, but after years of sending flowers, you have to mix it up a bit. Different arrangements, try to switch out the usual for something new. Speak to your florist and find out what’s best for your situation and the occasion. Make it special like these bloom box’s from Mellissa Andre.
  • Romantic Getaway – One of the most romantic gifts you can get your wife is a trip somewhere new.  Whether it’s a short weekend getaway or a week-long trip to a romantic destination; she will be excited at the thought of a couple’s only vacation. Even if it’s a local destination, the key here is to take time to focus on one thing….her. When your this far in a relationship it’s easy to get so caught up in work, kids, school, or whatever your routine is you forget to do the things dating couples do.
  • Diamonds – Diamonds are the obvious choice for the wife who has been perfect all year.  Personally, I would go with the classic diamond bracelet.  It’s a great V-Day gift that’s surprisingly affordable.  When selecting a bracelet, it’s best to select one that contains three carats worth of diamonds or more.  This will give you a spectacular look which is perfect when presenting to your wife.
  • Give her a night out – I know what you’re thinking, “the purpose of valentines day is to spend it together”, but let’s be honest fellas, we put a lot on our women. Surprise her and get her a gift to share with her friends or even by herself. A few ideas are a spa day, dinner, movies, a chartered boat, or a mini vacation getaway. Give her a chance to just let go of all her stress. And as a bonus, while she’s out take care of all the things she normally handles in the house. “The Crush” | Timeline: Pre-relationship  | Budget: $0-$100

Last, but not least, comes the Crush. Ok this one is a little different, but all relationships start at some point and valentines day is the perfect day to finally step up and make your move. But, beware, you do not want to come off too strong. No need for a gift, you don’t want to scare her off by being too intense. Here’s what you should do:

Valentine’s Day To-do List
  • Talk to her – The winning situation for a valentine’s day crush could simply be just letting her know your interested. This isn’t high school anymore, you aren’t asking her to be your valentine, but this time of the year is the perfect time to build up the courage to introduce yourself. Stop hesitating and take advantage of the season.
  • Invite her out for a first date – Ditch the gift! I repeat ditch the gift. Unless you have already been building a long friendship or something like that, keep it simple and just invite her out. It doesn’t even have to be on valentine’s day and it doesn’t have to be super romantic. A first date is not about falling in love, it’s about getting to know the person. Pick out a place or make a plan where you can have fun, but also get the chance to really talk and get to know each other. However, if you are going to go out on Valentine’s Day then make sure to show up with…come on I know you know the answer already… flowers. In a normal circumstance, this day and age, this may be over the top, but a  first date on Valentine’s Day is definitely the exception.

Remember guys, Valentine’s Day is in fact a special day, but it should never be the only one. You have 365 days to celebrate your loved one,  so make each and every one count to the best of your abilities because after all, “A real man can make everyday Valentine’s Day for his woman.”
